Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's lesser-used players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved no match even for a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
