EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
